Sum of the Parts

This exhibition was held at Visual Space Gallery in Vancouver April 19 – May 1, 2018

As the title indicates, each piece is composed of a collection of stencils that are arranged in different combinations. The mediums range from watercolour and acrylic paintings to polymer and wood constructions.

The individual parts of each stencil have an abstract value independent of their place in the original stencil matrix. For example, the same stenciled forms that comprise the bee matrix are composed into patterns that combine in different ways with the bee representations.

The gardener construction is built from a polymer material that combines the many stenciled parts of the representation into a three-dimensional image. I also stenciled the parts onto wood, cut them out and mounted them to form the complete stencil matrix in a bas relief format.

I am always looking for a context for using the stencil representations.
